Girls in Tikapur, Nepal, are increasingly taking on leadership roles in schools. According to Dharmaraj Sharma, principal of Karnali Mavi Tikapur, more and more girls are participating in extra-curricular activities and are even ahead of boys in some areas.
Keshar Bahadur Rawal, the headmaster of Khadg Smriti Mawi Tikapur, says that the school has prioritized the leadership development of girls, and they are also leading in the results of their studies. Headmaster of Himalaya Mavi Ghiya Puchhari, Buddhiram Chaudhary, also says that the girl students are progressing more and that the school is trying to bring them into leadership roles.
Raghunath Upadhyay, the president of the Nepal Teachers' Association Tikapur, says that he has experienced that female students are given priority in every leadership role in schools and that they are becoming better than boys. He also says that many efforts have been made to advance girls in community schools and that the education and health departments in the municipality are also conducting various programs targeting girls.
Surya Bhattarai, a teacher at Navdurga Basic School, emphasizes that teachers should work to increase the morale of the female students and give them leadership opportunities for education and other activities. He also says that positive discrimination is also necessary in school.
Sangita Shah, Head of Women, Children and Social Welfare Sub-Division of Tikapur Municipality, emphasizes that from the time a daughter is born, she should be brought up with the idea that she can take over the leadership of her parents. She also says that parents and society need to change their thinking and create an environment where daughters are seen as leaders of the society and nation.
