Kathmandu: The Nepali Congress has expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the government led by KP Sharma Oli, chairman of CPN-UML, despite being a major coalition partner in the current administration.
During a meeting of the party's Work Performance Committee held on Sunday at the party's central office, Nepali Congress leaders voiced their concerns about the government's work. Most leaders, including Farmullah Mansur, Mahendra Yadav, Jeevan Pariyar, Bimalendra Nidhi, Arjun Narsingh KC, Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, Dr. Shekhar Koirala, Bal Bahadur KC, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, Dr. Narayan Khadka, Sujata Koirala, and NP Saud, criticized the government's performance.
Former Vice-Chairman Gopal Man Shrestha informed that despite opposition to the government's actions, the party has directed its ministers to launch programs that connect with the people and to develop new initiatives in coordination with the government operation taskforce that includes both Congress and UML members.
After leaders expressed their dissatisfaction, Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba instructed Deputy Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister Prakashman Singh, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, and Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Badri Prasad Pandey, who were present at the meeting as members of the Work Performance Committee, to coordinate with the taskforce to introduce new programs that resonate with the public.
"There is a need for extensive improvement in the government's work. The meeting has instructed the Deputy Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister Prakashman Singh, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, and Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Badri Pandey to coordinate with the taskforce to introduce new programs that will touch people's hearts and give them a sense of development," Shrestha told "People are frustrated that work isn't being done. With two major parties in government, we must deliver development that people can feel. We've asked them to announce new programs in collaboration with the taskforce."
The government operational mechanism includes Congress representatives Vice-President Purna Bahadur Khadka, General Secretary Gagan Thapa, Home Minister Lekhak, and Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, along with UML representatives Senior Vice-President Ishwar Pokharel, Vice-President and Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel, General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, and Deputy General Secretary and Prime Minister Oli's political advisor Bishnu Rimal.
The meeting also instructed ministers to take stern action against wrongdoers, corrupt officials, and smugglers without discrimination. "We have instructed ministers to take ruthless action against wrongdoers, corrupt officials, and smugglers without considering whose side they're on," Shrestha said.
The meeting formally decided that addressing corruption and ensuring good governance could help alleviate public dissatisfaction. Leaders noted that ministers' performance evaluations have added to disappointment rather than hope. In the performance evaluation up to the month of Magh, only four ministers scored above 50 points. Congress ministers Prakashman Singh, Tejulal Chaudhary, Ain Bahadur Shahi, and Ramnath Adhikari scored below average in their performance evaluations, with Chaudhary receiving the lowest score of 15.3, followed by Singh with 26.25, Adhikari with 29.4, and Shahi with 36.65 points.
